Home automation (also called domotics) is the residential extension of "building automation". It is automation of the home including the electric appliances and monitoring status of different sensors deployed at each room i.e. temperature sensor, humidity sensor, light sensor etc. Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, and other systems in order to give improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security. Home automation for the elderly and disabled can provide considerable improvements in their quality of life. It also helps those people who might otherwise require caretakers or institutional care.
Electric power transmission lines can prove to lay a good high frequency communication network along with its low voltage function in buildings or across cities. Depending on the electrical properties of the wiring, different frequency bands can be used for optimized results. Since power line cables were initially designed for high voltage transmission so there is a limit to the frequency being used in its high frequency operation. Generally very high voltage flows from power generating station to grid, then it is stepped down until it reaches distribution transformers which further step it down to make it suitable for domestic usage. Power line carrier technology can be implemented at each stage. In this project we have only implemented it at the low voltage network

This system integrates electrical devices in a house with each other and with a centralized control unit. The techniques employed in home automation include those in building automation as well as the control of domestic activities, such as home entertainment systems, houseplant and yard watering, pet feeding, changing the ambiance "scenes" for different events (such as dinners or parties), and the use of domestic robots. Devices may be connected through a computer network to allow control by a personal computer, and may be allowed remote access from the internet. The scope of this project is very huge but we have implemented a system that successfully integrates and controls five electric appliances, a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor and a light sensor.
